Discovery research projects in AMOEBA are designed with two major components in mind:
- Research should align with topics that students normally encounter in the year-long Introductory Biology laboratory course at Idaho State University.
- Research mentors should engage students in research that is currently relevant to advancing their own field of study and is of interest in the context of their own professional work.
Structuring the curriculum with these elements gives students the learning benefits associated with a "less is more" approach and links the motivations that normally drive faculty research to students' teaching and learning.
